What is subscript text?

Subscript text is text that is set slightly below the baseline and at a smaller size than the surrounding characters. You see it most often in chemical formulas such as H₂O and CO₂, in mathematical notation such as xₙ and aᵢ, and in footnotes where a small lowered number references a citation. The lowered position and reduced size make subscripts visually distinct without taking up extra horizontal space, which is why they are the standard way to attach an index or count to a symbol.

Historically, subscripts were produced by typesetters using smaller physical type placed below the line. Subscript vs superscript

Subscript and superscript are mirror images of each other: subscript sits below the baseline, superscript sits above it. Subscript is the convention for indices and counts (xₙ, H₂O), while superscript is the convention for exponents and powers (x², E=mc²).
